GEBO
GEBO (pronounced gee-bo or ghay-bo)
GEBO translates to gift. It is the letter G and number 7.
The traditional interpretations of GEBO include: gift, love, partnership, sacrifice, generosity, good fortune, talent, sex, and forgiveness.
GEBO is gift, but along with it comes sacrifice, thievery, and curses. Odin hung on the Yggdrasil for the runes, the gift of knowledge. But this gift required sacrifice.
GEBO tells us good fortune is upon us, but never without a price. This price should not be seen as a negative repercussion, but, in some cases, a call to return that gift. Show kindness and compassion to those around you. Be generous. Be thankful for everything in-- and not in-- your life; large or small, it is all a gift.
GEBO, despite being a rather receptive rune, can also be reversed (though GEBO has no reversed meaning, I see "reversed" aspects present in every rune) to mean giving, rather then receiving the gift.
What exactly is "sacrifice"? What is "gift"?
According to the dictionary a gift is "a thing given willingly to someone without payment; a present." And a sacrifice is "an act of giving up something valued for the sake of something else regarded as more important or worthy." Basically, they both require you to give something willingly, only one requires payment and the other is given freely. Despite this, the two are not all that different when striped to the bare bones.
GEBO is a wheel, a wheel of life and fortune, giving, taking, being offered to, and blessing us as it turns.
Think on your talents. They are, essentially, gifts from above. Now think of imagine a modern gift; you most likely see a wrapped present. GEBO tells of hidden talents, gifts from the gods just waiting to be unwrapped. GEBO tells us to explore and discover what those hidden talents may be. Try new things and explore for yourself.
If GEBO is at the center of my rune-cast, I like to read around it like a wheel and interpret the reading with GEBO in mind. (I do not read my runes in the tarot-like way as many do, but I think this can be applied to any format.) If not, I will read as I would the other runes.
