The Runes and the Alphabet

You'll have to forgive me for the delay in my updates. Time does not appear to be on my side, as of late. These updates are slow coming, but I do hope they are worth while and my readers get something of value from them. This is just a quick, hastily throw together bit on the Runic alphabet, using the Elder Futhark. I have every intent to elaborate on this when I get the chance. Again, sorry for my absence.

The runes evolved from simple words to letters, most likely due to trade. Much like Cuneiform and many other ancient alphabets, the runes stand for letters, sounds, and individual words. But before the runes corresponded with letters, they were words. FEHU; cattle. EHWAZ; horse. ISA; ice. SOWILO; sun. BERKANA; bear. TIWAZ; sword. LAGUZ; water. And so on and so forth. Today, Runes are used commonly as letters in magick.

Among rune-texts we have political and commerce/trade--related documents, religious prayers/spells/chants, grave inscriptions, craftsmen-signatures, love-letters, and... graffiti. Yes, just like in Rome, (and today, for the matter) graffiti was common.

A simple Rune/Letter chart
Of course, there are many other similar runic alphabets. (aside form Elder Futhark, we have Younger Futhork, Medieval Latinised Futhark, and many others.) These all bare the same, and similar runes.

Runic inscriptions mainly read from left to right, just like modern day english (I am eternally grateful for this, seeing as I doubt I could ever get used to reading right-to-left or lingerer). Words were separated by dots, if they were separated at all.

I will add-on to this, so stay tuned.

Much love,
Kenna
